Sarah Palin

As everyone should know by now, John McCain has picked Sarah Palin as his running mate. On a non partisan level, it's cool to know that which ever side wins, there will either be an African American president or female vice-president. On a partisan level, it's just downright cool. I was impressed with Palin's speech this morning. Good strong speaker, I think she'll be able to handle Joe Biden in the debates (to be honest, I fear Biden will go into a "little woman" attitude, not because he's sexist, just because he tends to say things like that). Anyway, on top of everything else, Palin was born in Idaho! This is awesome and a first. There are two things about her that bothers me, she graduated from the axis of evil, the University of Idaho and since she's a self proclaimed hockey mom, she's probably a fan of the evil Alaska Aces, foe of my beloved Idaho Steelheads. But on those two things, I'm going to forgive her.

I like Sarah Palin, honestly I really do. I mean - I totally disagree with her on a few extreeemely important political things, but who cares? I totally want her to be my neighbor and we can grill out in the yard on a summer day, you know? I think she's aces.

But I get all feministy and pissed off at McCain picking her because it just REEKS of tokenism. It's so not fair to her, that her chromosome set is what got her the spot. Rar. She's good people, goddammit. She's not your trophy veep.

I will just sit here and scowl for a few days. On principle.

Is she a trophy veep? Probably, but take the chromosome set away, and most veep candidates are trophies, which states they can bring, what religions they can bring, etc. I mean for the last week, I can't begin to tell you how many times I've heard Joe Biden is originally from Pennsylvania and is Catholic (I've known of Biden for many years, and didn't know those facts).

So come on Beth, smile a little. ;)

See, I don't think Biden is being used - I think he's being counted not just as someone who helps in a campaign, but as a full partner in governing the country. (Other Dem possibilities, like Evan Bayh, would have been nothing but window dressing.) And Cheney sure as fuck wasn't a cosmetic addition, nor was Gore. But I'm very sure Palin is being used, and specifically her female-ness is being used, and I can't see a McCain administration doing anything with her other than patting her on the head and telling her to stay cute until the next election.

So no - can't smile. She's totally gonna get shredded by this process, and I liiiiike her and she totally deserves better for her future career, goddammit. And I know, I know, she said yes and she didn't have to so it's technically her own fault. But I'm really not looking forward to the next few months of watching a really good person being turned into a Dan Quayle buffoon.

Maybe I should just swear off the news. Sigh.

PS: YAY FOR THE JOB AGAIN!
